Every instrument makes sound the same basic way: a vibrating part — a string, column of air, membrane or bar — pushes the surrounding air into waves the ear detects as pitch and loudness. What makes a violin sound different from a trumpet on the same note is the mix of extra frequencies, called overtones, riding on top of that main pitch, plus how quickly the sound starts and fades.
