Nvidia Enters PC Chip Market With Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang appeared together at a San Francisco event on October 7, 2026, to introduce the Surface Laptop Ultra, according to wire coverage carried by OODA Loop and MarketScreener. The device pairs Microsoft's Windows software with a new Nvidia chip built for running artificial intelligence workloads locally on the laptop rather than in Microsoft's Azure cloud data centers.

What the Laptop Offers

According to Microsoft's official product page, the Surface Laptop Ultra is powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark superchip, which combines an Nvidia Grace CPU with up to 20 cores and a Blackwell RTX graphics processor. The chip supports up to 128 GB of unified memory shared between the CPU and GPU, which Microsoft says lets the laptop run AI models with up to 120 billion parameters locally, using Nvidia's CUDA acceleration.

The laptop has a 15-inch touchscreen with peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits, 100% DCI-P3 color coverage and a 120Hz refresh rate, Microsoft's page states. It weighs under 4.5 pounds, is less than 18 mm thick, and comes in Platinum and Nightfall colors. Microsoft's page also lists Secured-Core PC protections, Windows Hello and device encryption; it does not state specific battery-life figures in hours.

Pricing and Availability

Microsoft's product page lists the Surface Laptop Ultra starting at $2,599.99, with pre-orders open and a trade-in offer of up to $1,000 toward a qualifying device. MarketScreener's coverage of the announcement likewise cites a $2,599 starting price for the device.

Why This Challenges Intel

Nvidia's move brings a new competitor into a PC processor market that Intel and AMD have controlled for decades. Yahoo Finance reported that Intel's Client Computing Group generated $32.23 billion in revenue in 2025, while AMD's share of the market grew from 13% to 25% between 2023 and 2025. For Nvidia, the stakes look different: its gaming segment, the closest existing analogue to PC chips, made up only about 7% of the company's $215.94 billion in total revenue in its 2026 fiscal year, according to the same report.

The Memory Cost Problem

Yahoo Finance's report also pointed to a potential obstacle: the cost of the memory needed to run large AI models locally. It noted that Nvidia had raised the price of its separate DGX Spark desktop machine by roughly 75%, to $6,950, because of the 128 GB memory requirement — a cost pressure that could also affect how widely the Surface Laptop Ultra is adopted.

A brief from OODA Loop on the same announcement similarly flagged that rising memory component costs could limit the laptop's adoption largely to enterprise buyers with larger budgets, rather than mainstream consumers.

What's Still Unclear

The sources reviewed do not specify a confirmed shipping date beyond the opening of pre-orders, nor do they detail entry-level memory or storage configurations below the top-end specifications Microsoft highlighted.
