Perseverance Rover Breaks Mars Driving Record, Surpasses Opportunity's Mark

AutoNav lets the rover assess its surroundings and choose a safe path without waiting for commands from Earth, which can take many minutes to transmit across interplanetary distance.

According to JPL, Perseverance's navigation system processes roughly 600,000 measurement points for each driving assessment, compared with about 20 points processed by NASA's first Mars rover, Sojourner, in 1997.

Mission extension and what comes next

NASA approved Perseverance's first mission extension starting in October 2026, keeping the rover active through roughly the end of 2028, JPL said. At the time of the milestone, the rover was heading toward an area called "Idubi," within a region known as "Lac de Charmes" on the western rim of Jezero Crater, to study terrain that JPL said could be around 4 billion years old and may hold evidence of ancient hydrothermal systems.

JPL said Perseverance's next planned destination after that area is a feature called Rainbow Falls, described as a roughly 328-foot-wide block of ancient crust uplifted by the impact that formed Jezero Crater.
